Free Film Screenings for Schools
posted 13 May 08
QFT, in association with Cinemagic, is delighted to announce a new Free Film Screenings for Schools initiative for 2008, kindly supported by Northern Ireland Screen and Film Education. There will be a total of six free film screenings, which will form part of Film Education’s Sunscreens initiative.
The titles of all of the films in the initiative have been carefully selected by QFT Education to ensure that they support the national curriculum. They are also on Watch This, the list of top 50 list of titles recommended by the British Film Institute as essential viewing for young people aged up to 14 years.
The films included in the initiative will have accompanying teaching resources, some of which will be downloadable from www.filmeducation.org . A further five free screenings for schools are planned during the next academic year 2008-09, some of which will be shown during National Schools Film Week in October.
The first film to be shown at QFT on Thursday 12th June at 10.15am will be Spirited Away (PG), which is aimed at P6 and P7 pupils. The event includes a short introduction, and with the film’s running time at 125 minutes, will be finished at 12.30pm. QFT is located in the Drama and Film Centre at Queen’s University in 20 University Square, and parking can be arranged in the Queen’s Sport car park.
Spirited Away is an Oscar-winning animation by acclaimed Japanese film director Hayao Miyazaki. The film is about a young girl called Chihiro and her parents who stumble upon an abandoned 'amusement park' that turns out to be a mysterious bathhouse for the spirit world (a la 'Carnival of Souls'). After her parents are turned into pigs, the young girl must infiltrate the bathhouse to find a way to make them human again. Chihiro encounters an amazing array of strange and exotic creatures, some of whom help her on her quest.
This film supports KS2, subject area: Art & Design, Music, English and Citizenship. Activities in the teaching pack include Reading Media, Using Media, Awareness of Genre, People and Needs in Society and the Human Environment.

After School Film Club
posted March 08
Cinemagic would like to offer you the opportunity to set up and run an After School Film Club in your school for FREE!
Having received funding from Northern Ireland Screen and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure Cinemagic is able to offer the support necessary to run a weekly or fortnightly After School Film Club. You will be able to choose and order films directly.
During the Film Club students will watch a film followed by a short discussion. Cinemagic can help you with this discussion material. The Film Club project will run from April 2008 – March 2009.
In order to set up a Film Club in your school a teacher must be prepared to organize and run the club. Initial training, ongoing support and advice will be provided throughout the project by Cinemagic. Your school will also need to have a space where the film club can meet which has a digital projector, DVD player, speakers and a screen or blank white wall.
A similar project is running in England and for further information go to www.filmclub.org
*This will be offered only to schools that have received Extended School Day funding.
We are particularly keen to hear from post-primary, controlled, maintained and integrated schools.
Contact Laura Carlisle at Cinemagic for further information, Tel 028 90 311 900
