DERMOT O’LEARY TO  OPEN THE INAUGURAL DUBLIN

CINEMAGIC FILM & TELEVISION FESTIVAL FOR YOUNG PEOPLE ON 23 APRIL.

X Factor host Dermot O’Leary is gearing up for a special visit to Dublin on Wednesday 23rd April to officially open The Coca-Cola Cinemagic Film and Television Festival for Young People in association with Spencer Dock. The inaugural Dublin Cinemagic festival runs until 1 May in various venues across Dublin.

 

Faces from the world of film and television such as Cinemagic patron Dermot O’Leary, Rachel Kavanagh, Laura Woods, Tara Leniston and Chris Rankin will celebrate the festival opening in Movies@Dundrum, Dundrum Town Centre (6.30pm, 23 April) and for young movie enthusiasts the highlight of the night is the Irish Premiere ‘Summer of The Flying Saucer’ directed by acclaimed Irish filmmaker Martin Duffy. The young cast and crew from the film including Robbie Sheehan, Dan Colley and Joanne Kiernan will also be in attendance and will answer questions from the audience after the screening.

 

The fun-filled 9 day programme promises a vast array of films, masterclasses with film and television industry guests, workshops for schools sponsored by AIB Group, a cross border jury panel and Q&A’s all of which aim to entertain, motivate and create opportunities for young people aged from 4 to 25.

Special Previews

Special preview screenings during the 9 day festival include the Opening Night film ‘Summer of the Flying Saucer (23 April), the Japanese CGI anime film ‘Vexille’ (28 April) and the much anticipated action film ‘Iron Man’ from Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment will close the festival in Cineworld on 1 May.

 

Festival Films

Fun for all the family is guaranteed with screenings of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ (26 April), ‘Monsters Inc.’ (26 April), The Wizard of Oz’ (26 April) and ‘Toy Story’ (30 April); and classics such as ‘Stand by Me’ (24 April) and ‘Jaws’ (30 April) are not to be missed!

 

Secondary Schools can attend award-winning films, many of which are accompanied with educational discussions from guest speakers. These include ‘Turtles Can Fly’ (24 April) which tells powerful stories of orphaned children in a refugee camp on the Iraq-Turkey border, ‘Pans Labyrinth’ (25 April), the poignant stories from the perspective of three different groups of people in modern-day Iraq  in ‘Iraq in Fragments’ (25 April), ‘Amelie’ (27 April), ‘Run Lola Run’ (28 April), ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ (28 April), ‘Donnie Darko’ (29 April), ‘The Kite Runner’ (1 May) and ‘The Last King of Scotland’ (30 April).

Masterclasses (23 April- 1 May)

A must for young people (aged 13- 25) wishing to follow a career in the media industry are the insightful Cinemagic masterclasses taking place in Spencer Dock, The Mill Theatre and Filmbase. They include Television Presenting with Laura Woods and Dermot O’ Leary, Acting with Rachel Kavanagh, Matt Littler, Darren Jeffries and Chris Rankin, Directing with Dave Caffrey, Television & Music Production with Ned O’ Hanlon, and a class with the Casting Director Ros Hubbard.

Primary Education Programme sponsored by AIB Group (25 April- 1 May)

One of the highlights of the primary school programme is an opportunity to view special footage from this summer’s Dreamworks Animation blockbuster ‘Kung Fu Panda’ before the screening of ‘Madagascar’  (25 April) and a chance to meet the star of the film Po the Panda.

Secondary School Education Programme sponsored by AIB Group (23 April- May)

The festival offers workshop and film packages to complement what is taught in the classroom  and  highlights include an ‘Editing’ with Avid Technology’,  ‘News Journalism’, and  ‘Film Classification’ with the Irish Film Censor’s Office.

 

Q&A

Highly acclaimed Irish actor John Kavanagh (Closing the Ring, Alexander, The Butcher Boy) and up and coming young actress Rachel Kavanagh (The Tudors, Fair City, Shattered) will give festival audiences an insight to the world of film and television at a unique question and answer session in Movies@Dundrum, Dundrum Town Centre on Sunday 27 April from 2.00pm-3.00pm.

 

Young Jury Panel

Cinemagic is also offering an opportunity for young film enthusiasts aged 10-18 years old to participate in the festival jury competition. The jury panel will judge the best short film for a children’s audience (26 April) and the best short film for a teenage audience (27 April) and representatives from Film Ireland will be on hand to guide the jury through the basics of film critiquing!
