Young filmmaking talent was celebrated at Cinemagic’s LA showcase on 13th March attended by a host of film and television industry professionals including Gary Lightbody. The event marked the culmination of the 6th Cinemagic festival in LA which included young ambassadors from Northern Ireland and young people from schools and organisations in Los Angeles.
This year’s much anticipated Cinemagic LA Festival had the support of top industry professionals and film and television studios including The Jim Henson Company, HBO, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Aero Film, New York Film Academy, Remote Control Studios, BAFTA Los Angeles, American Idol, actress Paula Malcomson (Hunger Games, Deadwood, Ray Donovan) and TV Presenter Ross King (ITV Good Morning Britain, Lorraine) who all hosted events ranging from Q&A sessions, set and studio tours and workshops.
Through Cinemagic masterclasses, screenings, q&as, and workshops, young people had the unique opportunity to hear first-hand from those in the industry and gain an insight to the various roles and careers that exist.
To celebrate its 25th Anniversary Year, Cinemagic produced Northern Ireland’s and Ireland’s first Christmas feature film which will have its world premiere in Belfast on November 4th this year and special previews in Los Angeles in November. One of the highlights of the showcase was the first screening of special preview clips from the film.
The innovative film production gave budding young actors the chance to star alongside Robert James-Collier (Downton Abbey), Suranne Jones (Scott & Bailey) and Bronagh Waugh (The Fall) and got the chance to experience the mechanics of a film production. Over 40 trainee crew aged 18 - 25 were mentored by industry professionals who trained them in all aspects of filmmaking including direction, production, editing, cinematography, camera operation, wardrobe, make-up and music composition.
Joan Burney Keatings, Cinemagic Chief Executive said “We have delivered another very successful series of events in LA which have celebrated the wealth of creative talent among young people both from Northern Ireland and LA. With the valuable support of all our partners we have been able to inspire and motivate our young audiences and give them new opportunities to experience film and television culture.”
Cinemagic LA receives support from OFMDFM, DCAL, NI Bureau, Invest Northern Ireland, Fairmont Hotel & Bungalows, Causeway, Aer Lingus, Tourism Ireland, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, BritWeek and Variety.
