NI’s only Youth Film Festival programmed by young people is set to bring an exciting array of screenings, events and master-classes plus some very special guests to Belfast in the coming week.
The 4th Takeover Film Festival, at QFT and the Crescent Arts Centre from 7th – 9th February presents a programme packed with quality and surprises - all curated by the QFT Youth Panel.
Takeover 2014 boasts, among other events, two film premieres, a Gothic film focus, part of the BFI Gothic season, and some big names flying in from as far afield as New York, in this exciting line-up.
Sean Gullette, The Star of Darren Aronofsky's cult movie Pi will be bringing his feature directorial debut, Traitors, to the Takeover Film Festival for its UK Premiere. The film has screened at festivals around the world including Venice and at the Dubai International Film Festival. Set in the atmospheric surroundings of Tangier, and mixing punk music and drug smuggling, Traitors has a youthful, rebellious energy that sets it apart from other films and is the perfect way to open this year’s festival and its theme of celebrating youth culture, diversity and music. The screening will be introduced by Sean Gullette and will be followed by a discussion with the director.Gullette will also be delivering a low budget film-making master-class for aspiring young film-makers. For those who are interested in Composing Sound for Film, there is also a workshop presented by celebrated Dublin-based collective 3epkano.Other highlights include the award-winning We are the Best!, a funny, observant tale, set in ‘80s Sweden, about the young members of a punk band, who set out to prove that they are the best! The NI Premiere of Gone too Far, a gritty but blackly humorous rumination on racial tensions in London, adapted from the Olivier-winning play written by Bola Agbaje, will also feature a Q & A with the Agbaje and director Destiny Ekaragha.
As part of the Gothic NI season, presented in association with the British Film Institute, Takeover will also be screening some spooktacular delights over the festival weekend, including the eerie Expressionist classic The Cabinet of Dr Cagliari (with a live accompaniment with 3epkano), Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire, and a screening of Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro’s masterpiece Pan’s Labyrinth.
Our closing night celebrations kick off with live music from local band The Left Backs, backed with a fascinating special effects demonstration by Flails and Nails, wrapping up a truly eclectic and electrifying weekend of events at the 4th Takeover Film Festival.
