CINEMAGIC CALL FOR YOUNG FILM MAKING TALENT

The Cinemagic International Film Festival for Young People has launched its annual Young Filmmaker Competition for 2008. The judges are looking for imaginative and original short films made by young people to be showcased as part of the Festival which takes place in Belfast from 13th- 30th November. The Cinemagic Young Filmmaker Competition is free to enter and it is open to young people from across the UK and Ireland aged 4-25 years old.
The deadline for entries to the Cinemagic Young Filmmaker Competition is 31st October. Please send a VHS or DVD copy of your film with a completed entry form to Cinemagic Young Filmmaker 2008, Chris Shaw, Cinemagic, 49 Botanic Avenue, Belfast BT7 1JL. Films should be no longer than 15 minutes.

FILM & TELEVISION PRODUCTION COURSES AT TRANS

Trans ’08 is Belfast’s 'credit crunch' festival, with tickets for most events costing less than a tenner and some free of charge!
Running from 14 July to 10 August, trans will feature many pioneering and world class artists. Signature events include a unique One Man Star Wars Trilogy performance by Charles Ross, the sauciness of the Burlesque Summer Extravaganza, the return of the legendary Lap off, Money Back Guarantee and the Urban Market.
Further trans highlights include Los Campesinos!, Lisa Hannigan, DJ Food, London Elekricity, Andy Weatherall, the controlled chaos of the live drawing event and live beat boxing from multiple UK Champion, Beardyman. Indie Takeaway, Speaker’s Corner, Record Swap Shop and Live at the Dome are among some of the new signature events taking place.
Complementing the programme of audio-visual delights will be a series of free lunchtime and evening seminars, workshops and master classes covering areas such as social economy, podcasting, journalism and the future of the music industry.

SUMMER FUN FOR YOUNG FILM ENTHUSIASTS

Cinemagic is recruiting 25 young film enthusiasts aged 10 - 18, from all over Northern Ireland to take on the role of film consultants and help select the films for this year’s festival. The Coca-Cola Cinemagic International Film & Television Festival for Young People will take place in Belfast and from 13th -30th November 2008. The award winning festival will be action packed with over one hundred film screenings including special premieres, international features, documentaries, shorts, foreign language films, industry masterclasses and competitions.
Over the course of a three day workshop beginning on Monday 7th July the young consultants will work with the Cinemagic team to help steer the choice of films for the festival, as they watch and critique films from around the globe! Over the years Cinemagic has welcomed hundreds of young people to the young consultants’ panel and they have contributed greatly to the organisation of the festival, as well as introducing their schools and teachers to the variety of workshops and films on offer in November.
If you are a budding young film critic or you know anyone who would enjoy the opportunity to spend three days from Monday 7th July- Wednesday 9th July (inc) working with Cinemagic in Belfast, this is a fantastic opportunity to meet other like-minded young people, and have fun deciding the content of the largest film festival for young people in Ireland and the UK.
How to apply to be a Young Consultant:
Applicants aged 10-18 with a keen interest in film and the enthusiasm to work within a group for an initial 3 days this July and then on a regular basis from July- December, should apply to be considered for a place by writing/emailing a letter telling Cinemagic why they would like to be a Cinemagic Young Film Consultant, and a review of their favourite film. X Factor host Dermot O’Leary is gearing up for a special visit to Dublin on Wednesday 23rd April to officially open The Coca-Cola Cinemagic Film and Television Festival for Young People in association with Spencer Dock. The inaugural Dublin Cinemagic festival runs until 1 May in various venues across Dublin.
Faces from the world of film and television such as Cinemagic patron Dermot O’Leary, Rachel Kavanagh, Laura Woods, Tara Leniston and Chris Rankin will celebrate the festival opening in Movies@Dundrum, Dundrum Town Centre (6.30pm, 23 April) and for young movie enthusiasts the highlight of the night is the Irish Premiere ‘Summer of The Flying Saucer’ directed by acclaimed Irish filmmaker Martin Duffy. The young cast and crew from the film including Robbie Sheehan, Dan Colley and Joanne Kiernan will also be in attendance and will answer questions from the audience after the screening.

NORTHERN IRELAND SCHOOLS INVITED TO SET UP FILM CLUBS

Belfast based film festival Cinemagic, in partnership with Northern Ireland Screen has announced a call for entries to schools across the provinces who have received Extended School Day funding to set up and run After School Film Clubs from April 2008 –April 2009.
FILM CLUB aims to bring a broad range of film into 10,000 primary and secondary schools across the country. Eligible schools with a keen interest in introducing moving image as part of their after school activities will be able to work with Cinemagic and will be given the support to run a weekly or fortnightly After School Film Club.
The initiative in Northern Ireland, funded by The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, through Northern Ireland Screen is working to open up the rich world of film to challenge, inspire, unite and amaze young people. Teachers and pupils will be able to browse www.filmclub.org and access hundreds of recommended film titles which include mainstream blockbusters such as Pirates of the Caribbean and specialized and foreign language films such as Cinema Paradiso. All of the films are grouped into specially devised seasons and engaging themes to help guide teachers through a vast array of titles.

Cinemagic is an international film festival for young people based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was established in 1989 and over the years it has developed a worldwide reputation for excellence in children’s programming and is currently the largest award-winning children’s film festival in Great Britain and Ireland.
The 17-day festival includes international film screenings, big movie premieres, special guests, discussions, competitions and masterclasses in all aspects of filmmaking.
Cinemagic is a competitive festival with prizes for:
* Best feature and best short film for a teenage audience – judged by a jury of young people aged 15-18
* Best feature and best short film for a children's audience – judged by a jury of young people aged 10-14
Films made within the years 2006 – 2008 are eligible for competition. We are interested in all types of films and programmes for children and young people from preschool through to young adult. We can screen 35mm, Beta SP (PAL) and DV cam.

The Coca-Cola Cinemagic Film and Television Festival for Young People in association with Spencer Dock has launched its inaugural Dublin festival programme with a special preview of The Game Plan (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Ireland) in Movies@Dundrum, Dundrum Town Centre. The festival is set to run from 23 April - 1 May in various venues across Dublin.
The fun-filled programme promises an eclectic range of films, masterclasses with film and television industry guests, workshops for schools sponsored by AIB Group, a cross border jury panel and Q&A's all of which aim to entertain, motivate and create opportunities for young people aged from 4 to 25 (www.cinemagic.ie). CALLING YOUNG ACTORS FROM NEWRY

Are you aged between 13 and 18 and looking for an opportunity to let your acting talent shine through? If so, a three-day intensive acting masterclass called Cinemagic Stars in association with Deep River Rock and Newry and Mourne District Council is offering budding starlets the perfect opportunity to learn from a leading industry professional.
Supported by Arts & Business through the Reach investment scheme, the masterclass is taking place in Newry Arts Centre, from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 March. Young people from Newry are being given the opportunity to work with actress Sally Lindsay (Coronation Street) to develop their acting skills, rehearse scripts and prepare a special stage performance for family and friends on the final day.

CINEMAGIC CELEBRATES SUCCESS OF YOUNG PEOPLE AND FILMMAKERS AS CURTAIN CLOSES ON FILM FESTIVAL.
The curtain closed on the Coca-Cola Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival after two action packed weeks of international film screenings, workshops, masterclasses, and industry discussions, with a special awards ceremony on Friday 30 November at Storm Cinemas, Belfast.
Hosted by Citybeat’s Marc Mallett, the awards ceremony celebrated the success of the winning competition films announced by the young Cinemagic Jury who watched and reviewed all the festival films from 16 to 30 November.
The winning films in the following categories were - Best Short for a Children’s Audience – The Sunday Man (American Film Institute), Best Feature for a Children’s Audience - Rudy the Return of the Racing Pig (Bavaria International), Best Short for a Teenage Audience- Teeth (Diva Media, Ireland), Best Feature for a Teenage Audience Zozo (Swedish Film Institute).
