Cinemagic New York and Los Angeles
To mark the 20th anniversary of the Cinemagic International Film & Television Festival for Young People, the award-winning Northern Ireland based charity visited the USA to deliver two satellite festivals in New York (26th-27th February) and Los Angeles (1st-4th March).
Cinemagic worked in partnership with a number of schools, charities, arts and media organisations including Sesame Workshop, the producers behind Sesame Street, The Jim Henson Company, Irish Arts Center, Ghetto Film School, Sepia Films and REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater) International Children’s Film Festival to offer young people the opportunity to attend Irish film screenings and participate in acting, production and scriptwriting workshops with leading industry professionals. Screenings included 2010 Oscar nominated film ‘Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty’ which was shortlisted in the best animated short film category.
Among those supporting Cinemagic’s USA events included Jason Connery, Edward Burns, Patrick Bergin, Sile Bermingham and Ryan Rowe. This summer, young people from Belfast and Dublin will have the opportunity to work with young people from Ghetto Film School, New York, as part of an international film project where budding filmmakers from all over Ireland will come together and make a short film in a week which will be screened at Cinemagic’s 20th Anniversary Festival in Belfast in November.
Aubrey Irwin, Tourism Ireland’s Head of Northern Ireland said “After successful tours in Dublin, England and France we are delighted to see Cinemagic come to the United States in 2010. It is a chance for Northern Ireland to repay the interest and commitment of many great American cinema talents who have been travelling back and forth to Belfast over the past 20 years.”
Eugene Downes, CEO of Culture Ireland said “More than ever before, Irish artists are defining Ireland's global reputation as a leader in imagination and innovation. Cinemagic is a unique and imaginative approach to showcasing film while at the same time offering young people an opportunity to explore their creativity and stimulate discussion. Irish culture has a unique resonance in America, and Culture Ireland is pleased to be working with Cinemagic to enhance that energy for the future, embracing new models of cultural cooperation and working with a wide range of partners in New York and across the United States.”
Norman Houston Director of the Northern Ireland Bureau said “Every child loves to escape into a world of colour and fantasy and dreams! Kids dream big and the world of film making today encourages that notion. Without it, we might forget that anything is possible. With today's modern digital technology, films are becoming a visual dreamscape that can take our breath away, inspiring children to explore their imaginations beyond the realm of reality. Northern Ireland is becoming a Mecca for film producers who are looking for European locations and Cinemagic goes to prove that we have the vision to make things work.”
Congratulating Cinemagic on their USA programme, U.S. Consul General Kamala Lakhdhir added “I thoroughly enjoyed viewing some excellent films during December’s Cinemagic event in Belfast, and I am delighted that this outstanding festival will now be showcased in the U.S. I have every confidence that industry professionals there will be extremely interested to learn about the accomplishments of Joan Burney Keatings and her team. Collectively, they epitomize the depth of talent that is evident in Northern Ireland’s creative arts industry, and we wish them well in their endeavours.”
Pascal Ladreyt, Executive Director of ELMA (European Languages and Movies in America) added “Our mission is to foster intercultural exchanges between the US and Europe through the medium of cinema and form a new generation of film viewers. We are therefore very happy to support Cinemagic in their endeavour to bring a piece of Irish Culture to the US and we wish them a continued success.”
